Williamsburg

Overview

Williamsburg, BROOKLYN, NEW YORK

This neighborhood gets its name from the bridge that connects it to Manhattan, but you don’t have to go far to find the exclusive mixture of style, culture, exceptionally trendy, and extravagantly thrifty essence that is Williamsburg, Brooklyn. This community gained popularity in the mid-20th century as a safe haven for bohemians and hipsters coming out of SoHo and the East Village. It has evolved into the prime benefactor of gentrification. With whiffs of Euro-hip filling the air, Williamsburg keeps itself elite with the noticeable under-representation of commercial business and high volume of Mom and Pop boutiques. The value of real estate has been rapidly increasing due to conversions done on old warehouses that transform them into luxury condominiums, multifamily units, and loft spaces. Upscale housing is prime picking for the young and attractive. With loads of entertainment from Bedford Avenue to Manhattan Avenue, people come far and wide on the J, M, Z, L, and G trains to check out restaurants and bars, retail stores, go-kart tracks, music halls, organic groceries, and take romantic walks on the Williamsburg Bridge. To enjoy the night, The Panther Room on N 12th Street is the place to go to see an large array of artists from different genres from indie to hip-hop with prices mostly falling under $50. To see the immaculacy of Williamsburg, stopping by The Four Horsemen on Grand Street (established by LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy) for wine tasting and a charming food menu with contemporary dishes. This town is also served by the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, several bus routes, and the East River Ferry to 34th Street and the Wall Street area. Enclaves of every ethnic group, from Hasidic Jewish to Hispanic, from Polish to African American, have added parts of themselves into the scene to create a well-blended clash of art, music, and theater of over the last 50 years. Williamsburg is District 14 of NYC Department of Education and also has several charter schools in the area.
